There are few crunchy snacks better than a big batch of Homemade Chex Mix, especially when it’s loaded with cereal, cheese crackers, pretzels, garlic rye chips, and Goldfish. Everything gets coated in a savory butter mixture made with Worcestershire sauce, seasoned salt, garlic powder, and a little hot sauce before being baked low and slow until perfectly toasted.

We always make this Homemade Chex Mix when we head to the beach. It’s become one of our favorite beach snacks because you can make a huge batch ahead of time, throw it in an airtight container, and have the perfect snack ready whenever you want it. Whether you need an afternoon snack at the beach, something for movie night, or an easy after-school snack, this homemade Chex mix recipe is hard to beat.
Why You’ll Love This Homemade Chex Mix Recipe
While the original Chex Party Mix is a classic for a reason, making your own snack mix means you can load it with all your favorite ingredients.
My version combines Crispix cereal with Cheez-It crackers, pretzels, garlic rye chips, and Goldfish. You get something different in every handful, from salty pretzels to cheesy crackers and those extra-seasoned rye chips.

The best part is the seasoned butter. Melted butter combines with Worcestershire sauce, Lawry’s Seasoned Salt, garlic powder, and hot sauce to create a savory coating that works its way into every piece.
It’s easy, customizable, and perfect for feeding a crowd.
What You’ll Need for Homemade Chex Mix
The complete measurements are in the recipe card, but the snack mixture starts with a handful of simple ingredients.
Instead of traditional Chex cereals, this recipe uses Crispix cereal, which gives you that familiar light and crispy texture.

If you want to make a version closer to the original recipe, you can substitute or combine Crispix with Rice Chex, Corn Chex, and Wheat Chex. All three Chex cereals work great and give the cereal mixture slightly different flavors and textures.
Garlic rye chips are one of my favorite additions. You can also use regular rye chips or bagel chips depending on what you can find.
Cheez-Its, Goldfish, and pretzels round out the mixture and make every handful a little different.
The Secret Is the Seasoned Butter Mixture
What separates the best Chex mix recipes from a bowl of ordinary crackers and cereal is the seasoning.

Start by melting two sticks of butter. Once you melt butter, whisk in the Worcestershire sauce, seasoned salt, garlic powder, and hot sauce.
That melted butter carries all of the seasoning and helps it stick to every piece in the large bowl.

When adding the butter mixture to the cereal mixture, pour it slowly while tossing continuously. This is important because you don’t want all that flavor pooling at the bottom of the large mixing bowl.
Take your time and make sure everything gets evenly coated.
How to Make Homemade Chex Mix in the Oven
Preheat your oven to 250°F.
Add the Crispix, Cheez-Its, pretzels, garlic rye chips, and Goldfish to a large mixing bowl and gently combine.
Prepare your seasoned butter, then slowly pour it over the dry ingredients while tossing.
Spread the mixture across a large baking sheet or roasting pan. Ideally, keep everything close to a single layer so it can toast evenly.

Bake for 1–1 1/2 hours, stirring thoroughly every 20 minutes.
You’ll know it’s ready when the mixture is dry, toasted, and crispy.
How to Make Smoked Chex Mix on a Pit Boss Pellet Grill
The oven is the easiest way to make this recipe, but sometimes I’ll throw it on my Pit Boss Pellet Grill instead.
Set your pellet grill to 250°F for indirect cooking and prepare the recipe exactly the same way.
Place the pan directly on the grill and cook for 1–1 1/2 hours, stirring every 20 minutes.
The pellet grill adds just enough smoke to the cereal, crackers, and rye chips without overpowering the buttery seasoning. If you already have the grill running, it’s one of my favorite ways to put a BBQ spin on a classic snack.
Let Your Chex Mix Cool
Don’t immediately transfer your finished snack mix into a container.
Allow it to cool completely to room temperature first. The cereal and crackers will continue to crisp as they cool.

Once completely cooled, transfer everything to an airtight container. This helps preserve that crunchy texture and makes the mix easy to pack for road trips, parties, or a day at the beach.
Easy Ways to Customize Your Snack Mix
Homemade Chex Mix is incredibly easy to customize.
Try adding Rice Chex, Corn Chex, Wheat Chex, bagel chips, extra rye chips, peanuts, oyster crackers, or your favorite crunchy snacks.
You can also adjust the hot sauce depending on how much heat you want.
The important thing is keeping a good balance of cereal, crackers, pretzels, and smaller crunchy pieces so every handful has plenty of variety.
The Perfect Beach and Afternoon Snack
This Homemade Chex Mix has become a beach tradition for us, and there’s a reason we make it every time we go.

It travels well, doesn’t need refrigeration, and it’s easy to pass around when everyone wants something salty and crunchy. Make it before leaving, pack it into an airtight container, and you’ve got an afternoon snack ready for the entire trip.
It’s just as good for game day, movie night, road trips, parties, or an after-school snack.
Final Thoughts
This Homemade Chex Mix recipe takes the idea behind the original Chex Party Mix and loads it with some of my favorite snack ingredients. Crispix, Cheez-Its, pretzels, Goldfish, and garlic rye chips get coated in a savory mixture of melted butter, Worcestershire sauce, seasoned salt, garlic powder, and hot sauce before being toasted until crispy.
Make it in the oven for an easy batch, or put it on your Pit Boss Pellet Grill when you want to add a little smoky flavor.
Either way, once you start grabbing handfuls of this stuff, it’s hard to stop. Make a big batch before your next beach trip, because this might become your new favorite snack too.

Homemade Chex Mix
Ingredients
SNACK MIX
- 12 oz Crispix cereal
- 12.4 oz Cheez-It crackers
- 12 oz pretzels
- 8 oz garlic rye chips
- 6.6 oz Goldfish crackers
SEASONED BUTTER
- 2 sticks unsalted butter, melted
- 1/4 cup Worcestershire sauce
- 4 tsp Lawry’s Seasoned Salt
- 3 tsp garlic powder
- 2 tsp hot sauce
Instructions
- Preheat your oven or smoker to 250°F, setting up for indirect heat if using a smoker. Add the Crispix cereal, Cheez-It crackers, pretzels, garlic rye chips, and Goldfish crackers to a large mixing bowl and gently toss to combine.
- Melt the butter in a small saucepan or microwave-safe bowl. Add the Worcestershire sauce, Lawry’s Seasoned Salt, garlic powder, and hot sauce, then whisk until the seasonings are evenly incorporated into the melted butter.
- Slowly pour the seasoned butter mixture over the dry ingredients while gently tossing everything together. Continue mixing until the cereal, crackers, pretzels, and rye chips are evenly coated, making sure the butter mixture doesn’t collect at the bottom of the bowl.
- Spread the Chex Mix evenly across a large baking sheet, roasting pan, or disposable foil pan. Place it in the oven or smoker and cook at 250°F for 1–1 1/2 hours, stirring thoroughly every 20 minutes so the mixture cooks and crisps evenly.
- Continue cooking until the Chex Mix is dry, toasted, and crispy, keeping an eye on the smaller crackers toward the end to prevent them from overcooking. Remove the pan from the oven or smoker and give everything one final stir.
- Let the Homemade Chex Mix cool for at least 15 minutes before serving, allowing it to become even crispier as it cools. Serve immediately or store completely cooled leftovers in an airtight container to keep them fresh and crunchy.
