Why You’ll Love This Chicken Bacon Ranch Pasta Salad
This creamy pasta salad combines all of the flavors everyone loves in chicken bacon ranch sliders into one refreshing cold salad.
The combination of tender chicken, crispy bacon, creamy ranch, fresh green onions, and melty cheese creates a satisfying meal that’s hearty enough for lunch while still being the perfect side dish at a summer BBQ.
It’s also a great way to use leftover chicken or leftover rotisserie chicken from earlier in the week.
The Main Ingredients

One of the best things about this recipe is that it uses everyday ingredients that are easy to find.
You’ll need:
- Rotini pasta
- Boneless skinless chicken thighs
- Crispy bacon
- Colby Jack cheese
- Green onions
- Homemade creamy ranch dressing
While this recipe uses grilled chicken thighs for extra flavor, you can easily substitute chicken breast if that’s what you have on hand. Almost any kind of chicken works well, making this a great recipe for using leftovers.
Choosing the Best Chicken

Grilled chicken thighs stay incredibly juicy and flavorful thanks to their higher fat content.
However, if you have leftover chicken breast or leftover rotisserie chicken, those are excellent substitutions and make this recipe even quicker.
No matter which kind of chicken you choose, let it rest before dicing so it stays tender and juicy inside the pasta salad.
How to Make Chicken Bacon Ranch Pasta Salad
Step 1: Cook the Pasta
Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil.
Cook one pound of pasta according to the package directions until perfectly al dente pasta. While the pasta cooks, prepare the remaining ingredients.
Drain the pasta and immediately rinse it under cold water to stop the cooking process and cool it down for the salad.
Step 2: Grill the Chicken
Season the chicken thighs generously with your favorite BBQ rub.
Cook over medium-high heat until they reach an internal temperature of 175–185°F.
Allow the chicken to rest before dicing into bite-sized pieces to keep every piece tender and juicy.
Step 3: Cook the Bacon
Cook the bacon until perfectly crispy.
Transfer it to paper towels to drain before chopping into bite-sized pieces.
The crispy bacon adds salty crunch that perfectly complements the creamy dressing.
Step 4: Assemble the Salad

In a large mixing bowl or large bowl, combine the cooled rotini pasta, diced chicken, bacon, shredded Colby Jack cheese, and half of the sliced green onions.
Pour in about half of the homemade creamy ranch dressing and toss everything together until evenly coated.
Step 5: Adjust the Dressing
Add more ranch until you reach your preferred amount of dressing.
Some people enjoy a lightly coated salad, while others prefer an extra creamy pasta salad.
Taste and season with additional black pepper if desired.
Step 6: Chill Before Serving
Cover the bowl tightly with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
This resting time allows all the flavors to blend together while the dressing soaks into the pasta.
Just before serving, stir in the remaining green onions and shredded lettuce if using.
Homemade Ranch vs. Store-Bought Ranch

A creamy homemade ranch dressing gives this pasta salad incredible flavor and freshness.
If you’re short on time, your favorite ranch dressing from the grocery store works perfectly too.
The homemade version offers a richer tangy flavor, while store-bought ranch provides convenience for busy weeknights.
Either option creates a fantastic salad dressing for this recipe.
Tips for the Best Pasta Salad
Cook the Pasta Properly
Cooking the rotini just until al dente helps it hold its shape after chilling.
Overcooked pasta can become mushy once mixed with the dressing.
Cool the Pasta
Always rinse cooked pasta under cold water before mixing.
This stops the cooking process while preventing the pasta from sticking together.
Don’t Add All the Dressing at Once
Start with half the dressing and add more as needed.
The pasta absorbs dressing as it sits, so you may want to stir in additional ranch before serving.
Use Fresh Ingredients
Fresh green onions, crispy bacon, and freshly shredded cheese make a noticeable difference in flavor and texture.
Fresh chives can also be sprinkled over the top for extra color and freshness.
If you prefer, you can substitute sharp cheddar cheese for the Colby Jack, or even stir in real bacon pieces for extra convenience.
Make-Ahead Instructions

This chicken bacon pasta salad is an excellent make-ahead recipe.
Store it covered in the refrigerator with plastic wrap or in an airtight container for 3-4 days.
If the pasta absorbs too much dressing overnight, simply stir in a little more homemade ranch or store-bought ranch before serving.
Many people actually prefer the leftover pasta salad because the flavors become even richer by the next day.
What to Serve with Chicken Bacon Ranch Pasta Salad
This versatile pasta salad pairs perfectly with nearly any grilled meal.
Some favorites include:
- Smoked ribs
- Pulled pork
- Burgers
- Grilled steaks
- BBQ chicken
- Chicken bacon ranch sliders
- Smoked sausages
Whether served as a main course or alongside your favorite grilled foods, this delicious pasta salad is guaranteed to be one of the first dishes to disappear.

Chicken Bacon Ranch Pasta Salad
Ingredients
PASTA SALAD
- 1 lb rotini pasta, cooked and cooled
- 2-3 lbs boneless skinless chicken thighs
- BBQ rub, to taste
- 1 lb bacon, cooked and diced
- 8 oz Colby Jack cheese, shredded
- 1 bunch green onions, thinly sliced
- 1/2 – 1 cup Homemade ranch dressing
- Shredded lettuce, optional
Instructions
- Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil and cook the rotini until al dente according to the package directions. Drain the pasta, rinse under cold water to stop the cooking process, and let it cool completely before assembling the salad.
- Season the chicken thighs generously with your favorite BBQ rub and grill over medium-high heat until they reach an internal temperature of 175–185°F for juicy, flavorful chicken. Let the chicken rest for 5–10 minutes before dicing it into bite-sized pieces.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the cooled pasta, diced grilled chicken, cooked bacon, shredded Colby Jack cheese, half of the sliced green onions, and about half of the homemade ranch dressing. Toss everything together until evenly coated, adding more ranch as needed to reach your preferred consistency.
- Taste the pasta salad and adjust with additional ranch dressing or seasoning if desired. Cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes before serving to allow the flavors to meld together.
- If serving immediately with lettuce, fold the shredded lettuce into the pasta salad along with the remaining green onions and additional ranch dressing just before serving. This keeps the lettuce crisp and fresh while adding extra texture.
- Serve chilled and garnish with extra green onions, bacon, or shredded cheese if desired. For the best make-ahead results, prepare the pasta salad in advance and wait to add the lettuce until just before serving so it stays crisp.

👩🏾🍳💋
Such a great comfort food
Wonderful !!
Thank you!!
I don’t eat pork bacon. What would a good substitute be? Turkey doesn’t crisp up like pork does.
I would just leave it out
Yay🎉finally a pasta salad without Mayo(hubby hates Mayo)! Can’t wait to make this!
If you don’t know how to make Ranch Dressing what is the best store bought brand?
I would make it yourself. Here’s my recipe https://gbque.com/classic-homemade-ranch-dressing/
If store bought, it’s really a personal preference. Some people love Ken’s, some Hidden Valley, or finding one like Chick-Fil-A Ranch. It’s truly a personal preference. Hope this helps!
Would love your recipe for homemade ranch dressing ! I love this pasta salad but the ranch takes it to another level
It’s linked in the recipe but, here’s the link (or search Homemade Ranch on my website) https://gbque.com/classic-homemade-ranch-dressing/
I hope you enjoy!!
This looks so darn good I’m cooking it today.
Thank you!!
This sounds delicious!! I’m gunna try it tonight- but do I have to have it like cold salad- keep warm/hot with lettuce on the side?!
Lettuce is certainly optional. I like it, my wife doesn’t but, if you use it, I’d add it when the rest of the ingredients are cold. It’s a great make ahead dish, so it can chill in the fridge.
Looks mighty good but what is the recipe for your sauce
It’s linked in the recipe but, also here: https://gbque.com/classic-homemade-ranch-dressing/
I don’t eat pork either so I used beef bacon it was very delicious. Thank you for the recipe.
Yum!! Glad you enjoyed!
