Oklahoma Smashburgers
Ingredients
BURGERS
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 large sweet onion, very thinly sliced
- Salt
- Black pepper
- Garlic powder
- 4 slices American cheese
- 4 potato buns
BURGER SAUCE
- 1/3 cup mayo
- 1/4 cup ketchup
- 2 tbsp dill pickle relish
- 1 tbsp chives
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
Instructions
- Preheat a flat-top griddle or cast-iron skillet over high heat until fully hot and lightly smoking. While the griddle heats, portion the beef into 2 oz balls and keep them chilled.
- Place a beef ball on the griddle, top with a small handful of thinly sliced onions, and immediately smash firmly into the surface to create a very thin patty.
- Season generously with salt, pepper, and garlic powder.
- Let the burger cook undisturbed for 2–3 minutes until a deep golden-brown crust forms and the onions begin to caramelize into the meat.
- Flip the burger, add a slice of American cheese, and cook for another 1–2 minutes until the cheese is melted and the beef is cooked through.
- Stir together the mayo, ketchup, dill pickle relish, chives, and Worcestershire sauce until smooth and well combined.
- Toast the potato buns lightly, spread burger sauce on both sides, add the smashburger, and finish with extra sauce before serving hot.
